Core Research

  • Efficient Power Delivery Systems in a Carbon Constrained Future - The research examines how to reduce line losses that typically occur due to the conversion of electricity to heat and electromagnetic energy. The goal will be to increase efficiency and indirectly reduce the amount of emissions at power plants.

  •

  • Arc Flash Calculation Standards - The research will look to gain better understanding of arc flashes and prepare for rare but catastrophic incidents.

  •

  • Energy Storage at Substation and Telecommunications Sites - A study that examines the technology and analyzes the cost of options to store increased amounts of energy at electrical substations and telecommunications sites, which could result in improved reliability.

  •

  • Smart wires demonstration projectSmart Wires - Smart wires are small electronic modules in development which can be attached to power line conductors and inject or withdraw reactive power. The result could stabilize voltage and cancel system imbalance.

  •

  • Power Transfer Ratings (thermal rating/weather sensitivity) - A statistical analysis of weather data, load history and line conductor capability that could lead to safely predicting the best power flow capability with minimum risk of overload damage.

  •

  • Cascading Outage Prediction - The project will analyze advanced power systems to possibly predict the probability of system collapse (outages) under certain combinations of load and system conditions.

Demonstration Projects

  • Real-time reliability software - This project will develop a software product to help a utility’s system operations department monitor the power delivery grid in real-time and warn dispatchers of conditions that could place the system in jeopardy.

  •

  • Predictive reliability and risk assessment toolsPredictive Reliability & Risk Assessment Tools for Transformer Fleet Management - An innovative process to gather information from large volumes of maintenance data and use that to develop actions to predict reliability, optimize maintenance and manage risk of failure and need for replacements.
